For every dreamer who feels stuck before the journey begins.
Let’s have a heart-to-heart.
If you’ve ever opened LinkedIn, seen job after job demanding “3+ years of SAP experience,” and felt your stomach drop, this blog is for you.
If you’ve spent sleepless nights trying to figure out where to begin, whether you’re too late, whether this world is too big for someone like you, I want you to know you’re not alone.
And more importantly: yes, you can become an SAP Consultant.
In this blog, I won’t throw quick tips at you or sell false hope. I’ll walk you through this journey with complete honesty, the emotional highs, the harsh truths, and the very real things you can start doing today to carve your space in the SAP world, even with zero experience.
First, Let’s Break the Myth: “No One Hires Freshers in SAP
You’ve probably heard this, maybe from seniors or even trainers, “You can’t get an SAP job without experience.” And I won’t lie – yes, the SAP field is competitive. Yes, many companies prefer experienced consultants. But that’s not the full picture.
Many freshers do break in, not by luck, but by strategy, mindset, and smart choices.
The industry needs new talent. It needs people who are hungry to learn, think critically, and solve problems. If you play this right, you could be one of them.
So, let’s start making that happen.
1. Understand What SAP Really Is — Beyond the Jargon
Before you dive into training or certifications, take a step back.
Ask yourself:
Do I really understand what SAP is? Not just the acronym, but the ecosystem, the logic, the business processes behind it?
SAP isn’t just “software.” It’s a way of structuring and streamlining how businesses operate, from how goods are purchased, to how employees are paid, to how customers are served.
And SAP consultants? They’re the bridge between technology and business. They solve problems using this tool. That’s what companies pay for, not just technical skills, but business understanding with a consultant’s mindset.
➡️ So before rushing to “learn SAP,” begin with learning how businesses work.
Understand processes like procurement, sales, finance, and warehousing. Learn how these functions connect — and then learn how SAP enables them.
You’ll be amazed how much more sense everything will make when you start this way.
2. Choose Your SAP Module Wisely — Based on YOU
This part is so important, and yet so overlooked.
Most people ask, “Which SAP module has the most scope?”
Wrong question. The right question is: Which module fits my background, interests, and strengths?
Here’s a quick guide:
- If you’re from finance or accounting, explore SAP FICO.
- If you love sales, marketing, or client interaction, check out SAP SD (Sales & Distribution).
- Into warehousing, logistics, or supply chain? You’ll love SAP MM or EWM.
- If HR is your space, go for SAP HCM or SuccessFactors.
- Into tech, programming, and data? Consider SAP ABAP, Basis, or HANA Modelling.
👉 Choosing a module that aligns with your education, past work, or passion makes learning 10x easier. And it shows recruiters that you’re not randomly jumping into SAP, you’re building on something meaningful.
3. Training – But with a Plan, Not Panic.
Yes, you need to learn SAP. But how you learn matters just as much as what you learn.
Many aspirants waste time hopping between YouTube tutorials, pirated materials, and half-baked courses. You don’t need to “do everything.” You need clarity, structure, and hands-on learning.
What works best?
- Pick a good training institute or mentor. Don’t just go for a fancy name, go where you get real-life scenarios, system access, and business process training.
- Insist on practical exposure. Watching someone else click buttons won’t teach you SAP. You need to work on a live or simulated system, practice end-to-end processes, and troubleshoot errors yourself.
- Don’t rush to get certified (yet). SAP certification is valuable, but it’s expensive and not mandatory for your first job. Focus first on getting confident in the tool and process.
📌 And here’s something real: your attitude matters more than your notes.
Trainers remember students who ask, explore, and experiment, and they often refer such learners when opportunities come.
4. Build a Killer Portfolio — Yes, Even Without Experience
“How can I build a portfolio when I’ve never worked on a project?”
You can. And you must.
Here’s how:
- Document everything you learn, especially hands-on practice.
- Create mock project reports, like a sample SAP implementation plan, a purchase-to-pay cycle in MM, or a sample client issue and how you’d solve it.
- Make a LinkedIn post every week sharing what you’re learning. Don’t overthink it, your consistency will speak volumes.
Recruiters aren’t always looking for a polished résumé, they’re looking for proof of commitment. When they see your passion and effort, it stands out.
5. Network Like a Human, not a Job Beggar!
This part is awkward for many freshers; how do you network without sounding desperate?
Here’s the key: “Give before you ask.”
Instead of cold-messaging 100 people with “Sir, any openings?”, try this:
- Comment thoughtfully on SAP professionals’ posts. Add value. Ask genuine questions.
- Join SAP LinkedIn groups and participate in discussions.
- Share your own learning journey, even if it feels small. People respect authenticity.
And when you do message someone, keep it simple and respectful. Like this:
“Hi [Name], I’ve been following your posts on SAP SD and learning a lot. I’m just starting out in SAP and building my skills through practice projects. If you have 5 minutes sometime, I’d love to hear your advice on breaking into the field.”
You’ll be surprised how many people are happy to help, when you approach them with sincerity.
6. Internships, Freelancing, and Foot-in-the-Door Roles.
You don’t have to wait for the perfect “SAP Consultant” job. Often, your first opportunity will be something smaller, but still valuable.
Look out for:
- SAP support roles
- End-user or super-user roles in SAP companies
- Internships or volunteer roles with NGOs or small businesses using SAP
- Freelancing projects on platforms like Fiverr or Upwork (yes, people do look for SAP help there!)
Each of these gives you real-world exposure, and a stronger case for your next application.
7. Keep the Faith – But Be Ruthlessly Practical Too.
Some days, you’ll feel like giving up.
The rejections will sting. The silence from recruiters will feel personal.
But let me tell you something no one says enough:
“It’s okay to be frustrated. It’s okay to feel lost. But don’t let it make you stop.”
You don’t need a hundred companies to say “yes.” You need one.
And that one “yes” can change your life.
So, update your resume. Practice mock interviews. Keep learning. Apply, apply, and apply some more. Get feedback. Improve. And repeat.
The people who make it in this field aren’t the smartest, they’re the most consistent.
You Belong in SAP. And the Industry Needs You.
If no one’s told you this yet:
“You are allowed to dream of being an SAP Consultant, even without experience.”
You are allowed to believe in yourself, even when the odds feel unfair.
Everyone starts somewhere. And if you start today, strategically, patiently, consistently, your future self will thank you.
Because the SAP world? It’s not reserved for the elite.
It’s built by learners. Problem-solvers. Listeners. Doers.
People just like you!
